One of the architectural monuments of Herceg Novi is the Španjola fortress, which translates as "Spanish Fortress". It is located northeast of the old town at the top of the mountain in Herceg Novi. The fortress is located on one of the highest hills of Herceg Novi. This architectural landmark of Montenegro offers a wonderful view of the city and the bay.
Initially, the architecture of the fortress was more like a church. But Sultan Suleiman decided to radically change its appearance, to make it more impregnable. To do this, he surrounded the fortress of Spagnola in Herceg Novi with high walls with four round bastions protruding at the corners. This construction lasted from 1539 to 1548, and the fortress received a new name - the Upper Town (Gornji grad).
