Yacht description

For sale – Classic Sparkman & Stephens 34, built by Aquafibre & West 1974. From famous America’s cup yacht designer Olin Stephens Unique opportunity to buy an original classic and rare Sparkman & Stephens The hull is built of GRP (glass reinforced plastics) with a very strong and high quality lay-up. Boat is FULLY rebuild 3years ago. The hull has been professionally sandblasted below water line Deck, roof and interior made from wood. (Iroko, Kumaru, Jatoba, Merbau) Deck has 10mm teak. Was installed old and custom made bronze portholes. Mast and rigging all in good condition, full suit of sails, engine and gear box have been renewed in recent years and have very low running hours. This type of vessel has legendary sea-keeping characteristics capable to sail anywhere in the world. See S&S 34 association page The S&S 34 has the ability to sail very close to the wind in heavy weather. This is a very important feature in any yacht that may be caught on a lee shore. The sea kindliness of the S&S 34 is due to its well designed hull that also enables it to maintain a good speed under reduced sail, and to be driven to hull speed under a moderately powered engine. Its 2,500 kilogram lead keel makes it very stiff. The S&S 34 must rank as one of the all time classics from legendary Olin Stephens' board, built in large numbers and successful both as a racer and later as a voyager beyond anyone's wildest hopes. At the time Olin said of her "We hope and believe that the S & S 34 will make a good all-round boat, so as to demonstrate in a fairly small package that a good boat for offshore racing will also be a good boat for cruising". In fact over many years old the design is still hard to beat to windward in 10 knots or more of wind. The design is so successful and so much loved that 37 years after conception the design is once again being built to order in Australia. The S&S 34 is, thus, perhaps the most celebrated and successful of all of the S&S production designs. Drawn in 1968 and later made famous by Sir Edward Heath, the first owner of Morning Cloud, the design was produced by yards in the United Kingdom and Australia as well as elsewhere. The boat was conceived as an out and out RORC racer and captured an astonishing number of victories around the world. Genuin reason for sale – owner cannot continue this project. Offers invited.
